Century trips up Albert Lea girls’ soccer

Most of the time a score is indicative of how a game was played, Tuesday’s game between Rochester Century and the Albert Lea girls’ soccer team was not one of those instances.

The Panthers (2-1, 1-0 Big Nine) scored a 3-0 win, but that score could have certainly been higher if not for the performance of Tigers goalkeeper Stephanie Ferguson. The senior made 24 saves and Century tallied 41 shots in what was a very busy night for Ferguson.

“It was Stephanie’s game all the way,” said Albert Lea head coach Rick Barnhill. “It was inspiring, our players drew energy off of it.”

The Panthers controlled possession for most of the game, but down 2-0 in the second half Ariel Christensen broke in behind the Century defense and was on her way to goal when she was tripped from behind inside the 18-yard box. There was no penalty kick awarded and the Panthers scored a short time later to make the game 3-0. Barnhill was not pleased with the no-call.

“That was a pivotal point in the game,” Barnhill said. “If I see that play 100 times, it’s a penalty kick 100 times. It’s a trip from behind.”

Century took control quickly as Katy Scherer scored the first of her two goals in the fifth minute of play. She scored her second in the 63rd minute. Lidia Ouk added the other goal in the 34th minute.

The Tigers continued to play without senior defender Sophie Miller who is still recovering from what might be a muscle tear in her hip area. The team will find out more about her condition next Tuesday.
