Concerts, plays, festivals plentiful this weekend

Farming of Yesteryear, 2 miles east and 2 miles south of Kiester, will hold its 26th annual threshing festival Saturday and Sunday.

The gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday. Bingo in the barn starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by gardening with Hank and Donna Wessels at 10 a.m. There will be a horse pull and horse logging demonstration in the arena at 11:30 a.m. and a parade at 1 p.m.

Following the parade, there will be a free horse-driving clinic in the arena. At 2 p.m., the Penny Family Band will play. At 3:30 p.m., Richard Miller will perform musical selections. A soup supper starts at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, the gates open at 6:30 a.m. There will be a church service at 7 a.m. and breakfast will be served from 8 to 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a horse pull and horse logging demonstration in the arena. A singles cribbage tournament starts at 11:30 a.m. and a kids’ pedal pull at noon. There will be a parade at 1:30 p.m., followed by a free horse-driving clinic in the arena. Music by Annie and Friends starts at 2 p.m. and the drawing for an Oliver 77 tractor will be held at 4 p.m.

On both days, there will be food; crafts; a country store; threshing, a sawmill, grist mill, horse plowing and other field activities; blacksmiths; silage and sorghum making; exhibits; demonstrations; corn shelling; a flea market; rope making; candle making; tractor plowing and field events; gas engines; a museum; gardens; a children’s barnyard and more.

Admission is $6 for adults. Children 12 years and younger will be admitted free. Those attending get a keepsake button with each paid admission.

Also this weekend is the Hollandale Harvest Festival (see the separate story on this page) and the Ryan Truesdell Memorial Softball and Volleyball Tournaments (with details on the sports page).

Friday, Sept. 11

The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise from 6 to 7:30 pm. Reservations are needed by 4 p.m.; call 383-2630.

 “Great Voices of Albert Lea” will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Albert Lea High School auditorium. Tickets are $10 in advance and available at First Lutheran Church and Tone Music. Tickets are $12 at the door.

The Lighthouse Event Center, 638 Marshall St., will present “Inherit the Wind” at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available at Tone Music in Albert Lea and at the Coffee House on Main in Austin for $12. They are $15 at the door. Student admission is $10 with a student I.D.

Saturday, Sept. 12

Glenville First Lutheran Church will hold its fall festival. Coffee and rolls will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. A meatball dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children ages 5 to 10 and preschoolers eat free. Baked goods, crafts and produce will be sold throughout the day.

The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Albert Lea Art Center will present the opening reception for “The Art of Quilting” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be demonstrations, displays and refreshments. Admission is $4 per person.

 The Hartland Firefighters will hold their annual pork chop and sweet corn feed from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hartland Community Center. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds go toward equipment and training.
