The finance director for Austin Public Schools turned in her resignation Wednesday, but officials say she left the district in sound fiscal condition.

Lori Volz, serving her 11th year as director of finance and operations, has accepted a similar position at Albert Lea Area Schools.

“From the moment she’s stepped into the position, she’s done a marvelous job,” school board chairman Don Fox said.

The district has a balanced budget but is asking voters for a levy operating referendum increase Nov. 3 to offset costs of inflation not covered because of a biennium-long freeze in state funding.

Though the district faces challenges, superintendent David Krenz said Austin is appealing to applicants because of its financial status.

“We’re in sound financial shape so we are attractive to candidates,” Krenz said.

Two area finance directors have applied for the position. The job opening was posted online Wednesday, and applications will be taken for the next few weeks.

Volz could not be reached comment this morning.

Her last day is Oct. 17.
