G-E football loses in shootout with Lanesboro

It was a shootout Friday in Glenville, but the Glenville-Emmons football team got started a little too late against Lanesboro in the Wolverines homecoming game.
Glenville-Emmons (2-2, 2-2 SEC) put 416 yards of total offense, but didn’t get on the scoreboard until the third quarter, trailing the Burros 28-0 nothing at the time.
Tyler Woodside caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Zack Williamson with under 10 minutes to play in the third quarter to make it a 28-8 game, but the Wolverines were never able to catch Lanesboro, a team still riding high after a 21-20 win over then No. 5-ranked Mabel-Canton the week before.
The flu bug hit Glenville-Emmons during the week and limited players during practice throughout the week. Wolverines head coach Derek Nelson said it might have been a different outcome if his team was completely healthy heading into the game.
“I think it would have been a different story if we had everyone there for practice,” Nelson said.
Michael Adams scored on a 5-yard touchdown reception from Williamson for Glenville-Emmons in the third to make it a 36-16 game heading into the fourth, but the Burros (3-1, 3-1 SEC) iced the game when Aaron Hongerholt scored his second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run in the fourth to make it a 44-16 game.
Michael Thofson added a 4-yard touchdown run later in the fourth for the Wolverines.
Thofson finished with 109 yards rushing and Williamson completed 14 of 27 passes for 185 yards in the loss.
Glenville-Emmons has hit its toughest part of the schedule this season and faces defending state champion Houston next week and two weeks later faces No. 10-ranked Mabel-Canton.
“My main goal is to get out of it healthy and have one or two upsets,” Nelson said.
