The streak is over.
The Glenville-Emmons football team wasted no time in ending a 21-game losing streak that spanned more than two seasons with a fourth-quarter flurry for a 34-12 win over Lyle/Pacelli Thursday in Lyle.
“I basically said they had to have this one otherwise it’s going to be a long season,” said Wolverines head coach Derek Nelson, who received a cold shower of water from a Gatorade cooler following the game.
As one could imagine the team was estatic following the win.
“The kids went nuts, the crowd went crazy,” Nelson said. “It was a good atmosphere. They thought they won the Super Bowl or something.”
Glenville-Emmons senior Michael Thofson was a force in the fourth quarter, scoring three touchdowns en route to rushing for 261 yards and four touchdowns in the game.
“He’s a strong runner,” Nelson said. “He was carrying three guys on him at any given time.”
The Athletics got on the board in the first quarter and held the lead until the second quarter when Thofson broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 4 minutes, 23 seconds left in the half.
Lyle/Pacelli regained the lead in the third quarter, but a 25-yard touchdown pass from Wolverines quarterback Zack Williamson to Perry Kirsch gave Glenville-Emmons a 14-12 lead.
From there Thofson took over, scoring on runs of 36, 19 and 15-yards as the Wolverines buried the Athletics.
Even with the win there was plenty for Nelson to go over in practice before Glenville-Emmons faces Grand Meadow. The Wolverines fumbled nine times and lost four of them.
“We’ll celebrate tonight but tomorrow we gotta go to work,” Nelson said.
