State health officials say the H1N1 flu is now considered widespread in Minnesota.
The federal designation reflects an upswing in influenza-like illnaess across the state, with at least half the state’s regions reporting flu cases.
The Minnesota Department of Health says more than 30 schools have reported a 5 percent absentee rate or higher because of flulike illnesses.
It’s likely not all the cases are novel H1N1 flu, but officials believe it’s playing a big role in the upsurge.
The state says there have been 272 lab-confirmed cases of swine flu, although only the most severe cases are counted.
H1N1 flu vaccine hasn’t arrived to the state yet, so health officials are urging preventative measures such as thorough hand washing.
