Immigrant groups to hold a march and a workshop

As part of a weekend of events set up to promote fair immigration reform, multiple organizations around the state have organized a march for justice that began in Owatonna on Friday and which will end in Albert Lea on Sunday.
The event, called “The Journey of Hope: Minnesota March for Justice Opportunity and Against Racism,” will be in Albert Lea at 7 p.m. today near Fountain Lake Park, according to a news release.
Ernesto Velez Bustos with Centro Campesino, one of the organization’s that planned the event, said the march will go down Broadway Avenue and end at the Freeborn County Government Center, where the Freeborn County jail is at.
Other organizations involved include Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Coalition, ISAIAH, Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network, Jewish Community Action, Interfaith
Immigrant Coalition, Minnesota Strengthening Our Selves, SEIU Local 26, Resource Center of Americas, The Advocates for Human Rights, Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota and Family & Children’s Services, the release stated.
The organizations are hoping to spread the message that “communities in Minnesota demand just and humane immigration reform passed in this congressional year.”
In correlation with the march, a series of workshops on immigration are also planned in both Austin and Albert Lea by The Advocates for Human Rights and Resource Center of the Americas.
In Albert Lea, the workshop will be Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 301 W. Clark St. In Austin, the workshop was on Saturday.
The workshop will include a presentation highlighting local Latino community members speaking about immigration and a reflection about how immigration impacts communities.
It will also include an interactive portion exploring myths about immigration and a look at facts about how immigrants contribute to the economy and nation.
