Westbrook-Walnut Grove was able to find a big play when it need to Friday night in Westbrook as the Chargers knocked off the Knights 28-6.

Both teams entered Friday ranked in top 10 in nine-man football, Westbrook-Walnut Grove was No. 7 and Alden-Conger No. 10, but it was the Chargers who had the bounces go their way.

“The score doesn’t tell the game at all,” said Knights head coach Chad Mattson. “It was a lot closer.”

Alden-Conger was whistled for pass interference on a fourth-and-10 during Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s first scoring drive.

The Knights failed to score on a first-and-goal from the 3 and the Chargers took over on downs. A few plays later Garett Anderson sprung free for a 96-yard touchdown to put Westbrook-Walnut Grove up 14-0 after a two-point conversion.

Anderson finished with three touchdowns and scored again in the fourth to extend the lead to 22-0 after a two-point conversion.

Alden-Conger came back with a 28-yard touchdown run from Brandon McTague, but the Chargers scored once more.

McTague led the Knights with 61 yards rushing as Alden-Conger finished with 70 yards rushing total.

Knights quarterback Michael Reyerson threw for 140 yards on 10-17 passing, but was intercepted three times in the game.

Mattson said he took the game with a grain of salt because his squad was affected by injuries up and down the lineup. Five starters were either out of action or played a limited role.

Alden-Conger faces Truman Friday in Alden.
