Rainbow continues to lay off workers

According to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Rainbow Play Systems cut 60 positions Monday.
The playground equipment manufacturer is based out of Brookings, S.D., and has a distribution center in Albert Lea.
The company previously cut employees earlier this year, the Argus Leader reported, and the company employed 315 people before the latest layoffs.
The layoffs came after a slump in demand and the loss of accounts, CEO C. Gregory Foster said in a prepared statement. Some work will move to China.
“Rainbow did everything in its power to preserve American jobs by attempting to keep all of its current mass merchant business and to service those accounts with swing sets made in Brookings,” Foster said. “Global forces outside of our control unforeseeably worked against us though, and cost us key accounts that unfortunately necessitated these job cuts.”
The move to China comes less than half a year after a Rainbow Play System playground set was installed on the White House lawn. One reason President Barack Obama’s officials chose a Rainbow playground set was because the systems are made in America.
The main production facility is in Brookings, S.D., and when the wood pieces are finished, they’re moved to the Rainbow location in Albert Lea, which is the main distribution center, said Kandy Barthel, director of office at Rainbow Play Systems in Brookings.
