A letter from Susan DeVries

Dear friends,
As we approach the one-year anniversary of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” I’d like to reflect on some of the changes this past year has wrought. Our lives are not the same, and we are exceedingly grateful to each and every person, business and organization that helped make it possible. We appreciate all of you.
Some of the changes in our lives are obvious. My health has become more manageable since the latest surgery, which took place in June. The feelings of despair and hopelessness, which were evident upon walking into the old house, have been replaced with peace, light and even a sense of wonder. Music class is still a place of learning and discovery, deeply enriched by the variety of many new and exciting instruments. Our family has been providing assistance to kids who need a place to live, and our oldest daughter left for college.
We’ve enjoyed having various groups out to the house, and it continues to be a joy to have friends and family visit. There is such a variety of products, businesses and services represented in our home, and we constantly recommend them to others.
Our family has grown physically, emotionally and spiritually. We’ve all learned a lot about being gracious, and we know there’s still more growth ahead! It can be tough being in the spotlight, especially for a teenager! The expectations are high, and we will always strive to live up to them.
Many questions have been asked of us, so I’ll try to address the most common ones.
Yes, Derik still enjoys using duct tape! He’s a little busy right now with football, various jobs and his girlfriend, but he’s made some great items this past year. A few examples include an apron for me and beautiful duct tape roses (not for me).
People often ask about my craft room. What an amazing time I’ve had in there this past year! It is so much fun! I’ve taught new scrapbookers, helped girls learn to crochet, and hopefully shared a love of crafting. The kids also enjoy using the various tools to enhance their school projects.
We’re also asked about the geothermal heating system. It works great, but it did use an outrageous amount of electricity. Hopefully that will improve. The alarm system is wonderful, despite the many times we’ve set it off ourselves, or locked ourselves out! The house is easy to keep clean, and the outdoor patio is fabulous!
Our family enjoys playing games, sitting around the campfire, babysitting our favorite boy, riding on outdoor recreational vehicles and making stuff.
The future looks bright, and we try not to think about the extra bills too much. We know God works all things out according to his purpose. Meanwhile, you’ll find us busy in the community, teaching, working, attending sporting events and searching for weekend jobs. Many of you will groan at this, but we always hope for lots of snow in the winter. When you drag out your shovels this year (or better yet, tractors) remember how delighted some of us will be!
God’s blessings from the DeVries family!
