The newly renovated Art Underground gallery in the historic Bessesen building at 224 S. Broadway Ave. is featuring the work of local artist Janis Schewe, whose first solo exhibition is titled “Passing the Torch.”

It is comprised of portraits of inspirational people throughout history who have ultimately sacrificed their lives for their high ideals while seeking the betterment of all humanity. The gallery is open every Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment by calling 383-2932.

Schewe used to be an active member of the Albert Lea Art Center, but left to join an alternative arts group here in Albert Lea. She has been growing professionally in her art since participating in the Albert Lea Art Stroll (November 2007). It was shortly after that debut that the concept for this show emerged. Schewe is also a member of the Artspace artist panel and is actively helping to develop new and better art programming for Albert Lea and the southeast Minnesota region.
