Ghost hunters coming to Albert Lea

Ghost hunters be on the lookout.
The Investigative Paranormal Society of Minnesota, also known as TIPSMN, will conduct two paranormal investigations at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center on Halloween night as part of an Albert Lea Community Education class.
During the first half of each investigation, students will observe the ghost hunting team, and then for the second half, students will be given tools to conduct their own investigation.
Students are welcome to bring their own audio recorder, video camera and camera to the investigation
According to previous Tribune articles, the building — which has served as a recreation center, youth club, temporary hospital, civic auditorium and theater — is rumored to be haunted from an incident in 1920.
At that time, there was a flu epidemic in town, and when doctors ran out of room for patients at Naeve Hospital, they transferred patients to that building.
One patient, Memie Gregson, later died there.
TIPSMN founder and lead investigator Nick Larson said he’s heard many people tell stories about the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. They say a lot of things have happened there.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Larson said. “It’s going to be a great investigation.”
The investigation will mark the two-year anniversary of the founding of the ghost-hunting team. There are now eight people on the team, who each conduct different parts of the investigation, whether that be operating the video camera, digital camera or audio recorder, to name a few.
They teach community education classes in six Southern Minnesota cities now, including Albert Lea, Owatonna, Winona, Faribault, Mankato and Austin.
They started teaching community education classes in Albert Lea last year.
Larson said the group most recently conducted an investigation in Faribault, where there was a flour mill explosion.
Before that, they investigated the Paramount Theatre in Austin. He said the group concluded that building was not haunted.
In addition to the paranormal investigations on Halloween, TIPSMN members will also conduct Paranormal Investigating 102 on Monday.
The class will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brookside Education Center and will go into advanced techniques of capturing and finding ghosts. Students will learn how to determine if a photo is real or fake, how to record and filter Electronic Voice Phenomenon, also known as EVP, and how to form their own ghost hunting group.
On Halloween, the first paranormal investigation will go from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the second will go from 10 p.m. to midnight. The fee is $19.
To sign up, people can contact the Albert Lea Community Education Office at 379-4834.
Larson said there are still spots available.
