Rebels sweep Madelia to stay alive in section tournament

The United South Central volleyball team overcame a slow start to sweep Madelia in the first round of the Section 2A playoffs Monday in Wells.

The Rebels (15-10) held off the Jayhawks in the first set 26-24 and then hit the accelerator in the second and third sets for a 25-13 and 25-12 victory.

USC, the No. 6 seed, moves on to face No. 3 seed St. Clair Thursday in St. Clair. The Rebels defeated the Cyclones Sept. 21 in five sets 24-26, 16-25, 25-23, 26-10, 19-17.

Marielle Schultz led USC with 21 assists Monday and finished 20 for 20 serving.

Kayla Stenzel had nine kills and Val Sahr added seven in the win.

Schultz, Carly Peterson and Tayla Sunde all led the team with nine digs.
