The Southwest Middle School functional skills room has been going green.
In the employability class, students and staff collect recycled paper, sort and shred it. After it is shredded, it either goes to the recycle bins or to other staff memebrs who use it for animal bedding. Recently, the class has been recycling tennis balls from physical education classes that have lost their bounce. Students put them on the bottom of chair legs in the classroom. This way, it is easier to move the chairs, they are quieter and don’t scratch the floors. The class recycles most everything that has a recyclable symbol and number on it, including plastic bottles, trays, boxes, pop cans and soup cans.
