Wolverines shutdown in second half against Houston

A year ago Houston crushed the Glenville-Emmons football team 66-0 in the first round of the Section 1, Nine-man playoffs en route to a state title, but this year the Wolverines were a rejuvenated team and found themselves leading the Hurricanes heading into the second half Tuesday in Houston.

Glenville-Emmons (4-5) was unable to hold its 18-14 halftime lead as the Hurricanes (7-2) shutout the Wolverines in the second half for a 33-18 victory in a 2-7 matchup in the first round of the section playoffs.

Tye Carrier ran for a touchdown and caught a 7-yard touchdown pass in the second half as Houston scored 19 unanswered points.

“We made a couple key mistakes in the second half and we just couldn’t capitalize on their mistakes they were making,” said Wolverines head coach Derek Nelson.

Zack Williamson ran for two touchdowns in the first half, including a 42-yard run and Landon Hall added a 6-yard run.

Glenville-Emmons totaled 395 yards of offense and Williamson finished with 111 yards rushing and 196 yards passing.

Derek Sanderson led the Wolverine defense with 22 tackles.

The Wolverines finished the season at 4-4, the first time the team finished with a .500 record since 2003 and Nelson couldn’t have been more pleased with the progress his team showed.

“I can’t say enough about the kids and how we’ve bounced back from the last two years,” Nelson said.

Glenville-Emmons loses six seniors from this year’s team, including Sanderson and running back Michael Thofson, who finished the year with 1,187 yards rushing to lead all area players.
