Doris Westland, 91

Funeral services for Doris Westland of Albert Lea will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at Hayward Lutheran Church. The Rev. Richard Spande will officiate. Interment will be in the Hayward Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church.
Doris died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Thornecrest Retirement Center at the age of 91 following a year long battle with cancer.
Doris was born to Hilda and Holger Frandsen on May 30, 1918, in Rocky Ford, Colo. The family moved to a farm south of Albert Lea when she was 4. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1936 and Naeve Hospital School of Nursing where she received her RN Degree in 1941.
Doris was united in marriage to Carrol Westland on Nov. 2, 1941. They had two children, Lois and Don. Doris and Carrol resided in Hayward from 1948 until 1997. They moved to Senior Court in Albert Lea and in 2007 Doris moved into Thornecrest Assisted Living and then to the Healthcare unit in 2008. Doris worked in the newborn nursery of Naeve Hospital for more than 22 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Minnesota Nurses Association and a Red Cross Volunteer. She was a member of Hayward Lutheran Church and active in many church groups including Altar Guild, Mission Circle and church Treasurer.
Doris is survived by her children: daughter, Lois (Dave) Abell of Big Arm, Mont.; son, Don (Cindy) Westland of Albert Lea; four grandchildren: Susan (Scott) Evans of Vista, Calif., Mark (Karla) Abell of Parker, Colo., Adam (Kristin) Westland of Chaska, Heather (Lucas) Lee of Albert Lea; six great grandchildren; and sisters: Virginia Venem of Albert Lea, Alta (Elroy) Madsen of Minnetonka; sisters-in-law: Carol Westland of Albert Lea and Dorothy Westland of Minneapolis; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carrol in 1998; sister, Lois in infancy.
She will be greatly missed.
