Get in the holiday spirit with weekend concerts

Traditional and contemporary Christmas carols as well as children’s favorites will be featured at a concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Theodore Catholic Church.

Jodi Blong, soprano, Janet Glaser, alto, Mark Holt, tenor, and Lisa Dahl, pianist, will be featured. Special guests include Aimee Chalmers, flute, Keith Nelson, cello, the St Theodore adult choir and more.

Admission is free, but an offering will be taken to benefit the St. Theodore sound system as well as the school.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, Dec. 11

The Festival of Trees will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m.

The Albert Lea High School orchestra will perform at Northbridge Mall between 4 and 8 p.m.

Local musicians will present “The Music of Mannheim Steamroller” at 7:30 p.m. at the Lighthouse Event Center, 638 Marshall St. Tickets are available at Tone Music for $10 or at the door for $12.

Saturday, Dec. 12

The Festival of Trees will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 The Albert Lea Community Band, under the direction of LaVerne Walheim, will present a concert of all-Christmas music at 1 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

Art Underground, in the historic Bessessen building at 224 S. Broadway Ave., features “Passing the Torch,” the work of Jan Schewe. The exhibit is open from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 19.

 Northbridge Mall will host a kids’ shopping event from 2 to 4 p.m. Children ages 10 and younger are invited to take part in a chaparoned shoppin event. Parents can enjoy hot cider and cookies while a group of chaparones take your children to shop for inexpensive gifts and wrap them.

The Albert Lea Area Youth Choir and the Stray Notes will present the annual Christmas concert at 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea. Both groups are under the direction of Eileen Nelson Ness. Gail Thurnau and Marilyn Chafee are the accompanists for the concert. The concert is open to the public and there will be an offering taken at the end of the concert.

Sunday, Dec. 13

 The Albert Lea Masonic Lodge, 147 N. Broadway Ave., will host an amaranth pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee will be served. Proceeds will go to the seasonal benevolence fund. Members of the high school orchestra will wait on tables.
