So many hearts were broken when we lost Matt in his fight against cancer at the age of 53 on Nov. 21, 2009.
Matthew Alexander Weigel was born Oct. 20, 1956 in Albert Lea.
He was an outgoing, nonjudgmental person who treated strangers with the same friendliness and respect as life long friends. He was a trusted friend with a great sense of humor and was always ready to lend a hand. One love of his life was Rebecca Schultz and for the last 32 years they lived up north where they could share their mutual love of nature. They were married Sept. 27, 2009. Together, with the help of family and friends, they built a cabin and a wonderful life in the woods.
Matt enjoyed physical work and worked as a handyman for over 20 years most recently at the Boys & Girls Club in Squaw Lake.
Hunting, fishing, and gardening were some of his hobbies. He created fish ponds and rock gardens and could name every flower and weed when asked. He loved carving with wood and deer antlers. He created memorials to loved ones and created dozens of unique Santas that he and Becky carved and painted together to give to loved ones on the holidays.
Matt is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca; one brother, James (Beverly) Weigel; two sisters: Vickie (Ron) Mourer and Julie (Steve Hazelton) Weigel; mother-in-law Evelyn Schultz; brothers-in-law: Steve Schultz, Tim Schultz and Michael (Christine) Schultz; sister-in-law, Kathy (Lowell) Jacobson; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Dominic and Ruth Weigel; one brother, Nick; father-in-law, Alvin Schultz; and one brother-in-law, Rob Schultz.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Dec. 5 at St. Catherine’s Church, Squaw Lake. Springtime services in Albert Lea are pending. A notice will be published for the those who wish to attend.
