Tigers lose rebounding battle and game to Mayo

Rochester Mayo broke open a 21-all ball game Tuesday against the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team with a 40-point second half in Rochester for a 61-50 victory.

Tigers head coach Sean Gillam said the difference was rebounding and the Spartans had a 57-38 advantage.

Mayo (3-3, 3-0 Big Nine) earned its third consecutive victory against a Big Nine opponent and did so with three players scoring in double figures. Rachel Doll led the Spartans with 15 while Julie Miller added 12 and Anna Hirssig 10.

Morgan Stadheim led Albert Lea (1-3, 1-1 Big Nine) with 19 points on 7 of 19 shooting while Skyler Anderson scored nine points. Abbey Arends, who averaged 24.7 points per game through the first three games was held to seven points because of foul trouble.

The Tigers shot 33 percent from the field and Mayo shot 31 percent, but attempted 71 shots.

Albert Lea plays Simley Thursday in Albert Lea.
