Much fun to be had this weekend

It’s a big weekend in Albert Lea.

The first Big Freeze, the Sons of Norway Sweetheart Dance and Silent Auction, an Albert Lea Community Theatre play, historical fair and a number of pancake breakfasts are all on tap for this Valentine’s Day weekend.

Friday, Feb. 12

The all-member show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m.

Albert Lea Community Theatre presents “Ah, Wilderness” at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, call 377-4371.

Saturday, Feb. 13

Senior Resources volunteer drivers will hold a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. at Applebee’s Restaurant. Tickets are available at the door or from volunteer drivers in advance. Cost is $6 per person.

The Big Freeze Softball Tournament and Broomball Tournament will be held on Albert Lea Lake starting at 9 a.m.

 The Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club, Department of Natural Resources, HT Enterprises and The Home Depot will host Take A Kid Ice Fishing from 9 a.m. to noon on Albert Lea Lake. Cost is free. There will be free ice fishing rods for the first 50 kids.

The Minnesota Skydivers Club will hold skydiving and tandem jumping from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. People must register by Friday. Call Bryce Nelson at 383-9377. People will meet at the main tent at Frank Hall Park and a bus will take them to the airport. Cost is $210, with a $50 deposit due in advance. This will be held if weather permits. If people are unable to jump, deposits will carry over to the summer season.

The Big Island Historical Faire will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Northbridge Mall. There will be many items for sale, as well as demonstrations.

The all-member show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 The Humane Society of Freeborn County will hold an open house at the animal shelter in Frank Hall Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. People are invited to see what’s new at the shelter and perhaps find a forever friend. Refreshments will be served.

 The Freeborn County Jaycees will hold a chili cookoff from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the main Big Freeze carnival tent. Cost is $3 per spoon.

 The Polar Plunge will take place on Albert Lea Lake at noon. The cost is a nonperishable food item.

The Southern Gateway Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will hold a youth fork horn ice fishing and wildlife exposition from 12:30 to 5 p.m. It is open to all youths. Snowmobile runs will be held on Albert Lea Lake from 1 to 4 p.m.

A winter carnival, in conjunction with The Big Freeze, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Academy Park.

The Bancroft Bay Blizzard Bowl (disc golf) will be held at Bancroft Bay Park beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The Albert Lea Sons of Norway will hold a sweetheart dance from 8 p.m. to midnight at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club. Tickets are $15 per person and available at the door. There will also be silent auction held at the event (with PayPal available). The event is a fundraiser to save the Sons of Norway lodge and for scholarships.

A concert featuring Canyon Cowboys will be held in a heated tent on Albert Lea Lake from 8 p.m. to midnight. People must be 18 years or older to attend. Cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce, Albert Lea Convention & Visitors Bureau, Parks & Recreation office and Doyle’s Hallmark.

Sunday, Feb. 14

The Albert Lea Masonic Lodge, 147 N. Broadway Ave., will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pancakes, eggs and sausage, orange juice and coffee will be served. Albert Lea High School musicians will be serving.

A pancake breakfast to benefit the Pelican Breeze will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Club. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children and kids 5 years and younger eat free.
