Former Albert Lea High School standout wrestler Ben Berhow started his third trip to the NCAA wrestling championship meet in Omaha, Neb. with a pair of overtime victories over seeded wrestlers.
Berhow is one victory away from becoming an All-American for the first time in his career after he beat Indiana’s Nate Everhart and Cal State Bakersfield’s Mitch Monteiro.
Berhow’s last loss came to Everhart, but Berhow scored a takedown with 10 seconds to go in overtime to clinch the victory.
Berhow, who entered the tournament unranked, will meet Lehigh’s third-seeded Zachery Rey Friday in the quarterfinals at heavyweight.
Berhow made up for a loss earlier in the season against 11th-seeded Monteiro with a 6-4 overtime decision.
Berhow had won just two matches in his career at the NCAA tournament before Thursday.
The Gophers moved into eighth place overall. Iowa leads with 34.5 points.
