May Rose Borglum Monson, 88, of Blue Earth, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2010, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at North Blue Earth Lutheran Church in Brush Creek Township. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center chapel in Blue Earth, and one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Steve Bohling and the Rev. Patricia Hinkie will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the North Blue Earth Lutheran Church.
May was born May 27, 1921, in rural Easton, the daughter of John and Karla (Pedersen) Borglum. She graduated from Frost High School in 1940. She then attended normal school in Blue Earth, and taught country school for a number of years. She was a teacher, a homemaker, and a professional volunteer. On June 26, 1948, she married Elwood Monson at the North Blue Earth Lutheran Church. To this union, five children were born. In 1976 Elwood passed away. May moved off the farm and into Blue Earth in 1981.
May volunteered with the United Hospital Auxiliary, Rainbow Food Co-op, St. Luke’s Auxiliary, and the Faribault County Historical Society. She was superintendent of North Blue Earth Sunday School, and held many offices, including president, of the church women. She was nominated for Senior Citizen of the Year at the Faribault County Fair. She was a farmer’s wife, an avid walker and loved to ride bicycle. May enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s activities, including sports and music.
May is survived by her children: Rose (Doug) Roberts of Omaha, Neb.; Janine (Steve) Pilcher of Blue Earth; Erik (Susie) Monson of Bricelyn; Karla (Gene) Tukua of Hartland; Donna (Ronnie) Bartness of Hartland; 10 grandchildren: Daniele (Timothy), Arlette (Ryan), Stephanie (Ryan), Jonathan, Spencer, Luke, Naomi (Chris), Seth, Thomas, and Timothy; nine great-grandchildren: McKenna, Olivia, Aniston, Cameran, Ellis, Ethan, Zachary, Jakob and Audyn. She is also survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Phillip and Sonia Monson of Blue Earth; sister-in-law, Katie Borglum of Mankato; sister-in-law, Marian Borglum of Frost; brother, Leo Borglum of Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents: John and Karla; her husband, Elwood; grandson, John Roberts; brothers: Harry Borglum and Henry “Hank” Borglum; older sister, May Rose Borglum; parents-in-law, Edward and Marie Monson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Burns.
May peacefully went to her eternal home with all of her family lovingly by her side.
