No. 8 Red Wing ends Tigers’ season

The seventh-seeded Albert Lea girls’ basketball team gave up too many second chance points Wednesday against second-seeded Red Wing in the first round of the Section 1AAA playoffs in Red Wing and it cost the Tigers.
The Wingers attempted 76 shots compared to 49 for Albert Lea and the second chances helped Red Wing beat the Tigers 69-46 to end their season.
The eighth-ranked Wingers (20-6) outrebounded Albert Lea (11-14) 41-23 and pressured the Tigers into making 19 turnovers.
“We hadn’t seen a team that puts that kind of ball pressure on,” said Albert Lea head coach Sean Gillam.
Senior Abbey Arends returned to the lineup for the Tigers after battling a bout of mono and she led the team with 17 points. Alyssa Sager added 15 points but Albert Lea fell behind early and couldn’t recover.
Red Wing took a 31-19 lead at halftime and put up 38 points in the second half to bounce the Tigers from the first round of the section playoffs for the second consecutive season.
