Sheriff’s worker at center of probe

A former Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office secretary is the subject of an internal investigation, Sheriff Mark Harig confirmed Wednesday.

The employee, Kelly Davenport, who worked in the civil processing department of the Sheriff’s Office, submitted a resignation letter last week, which was accepted Tuesday by the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners.

Harig said he did not feel comfortable expanding on the nature of the investigation until Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson had a chance to look at the investigation report and figure out how to proceed with charges.

There was also no discussion about the situation during the commissioners’ meeting.

Harig said there are still a few more interviews that need to be conducted for the investigation, and then once the interviews are typed they will be included in a report that goes to Nelson.

Nelson said he will probably refer the case to another county attorney’s office, as his office has had occasional contact with the employee because of her job, and because she was a county employee at the time of the alleged incidents.

Davenport scheduled trips for Immigration and Customs Enforcement vans to run detainees to court, scheduled trips for other commitments and performed other bookkeeping duties, Harig said.
