“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking- it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” I Corinthians 13:4-7
Many of us have read this beautiful passage. Jeane Cowin’s life was a testament to love. She exemplified this passage with her parents, husband, children, grandchildren, students, friends, and all who crossed her path. Jeane peacefully met her heavenly Father at 6:05 p.m. on April 21, 2010, surrounded by loved ones.
Jeane Joyce (Brandt) Cowin was born on Feb., 20, 1937, the only child of John and Ottie (Runksmeier) Brandt. Jeane graduated from Luther College in 1958, with a degree in Elementary Education. Jeane traveled to California to visit her uncle in the summer of 1958. There she met the “love of her life” a Marine, Earl Cowin. Jeane and Earl were married on Feb. 22, 1959. The young couple settled In Ledyard in 1961. Jeane and Earl raised three children on their farm north of Ledyard. The family enjoyed summer vacations to Alexandria, Minnesota and winter ski trips throughout the United States.
Jeane’s life was dedicated to teaching for over 35 years at Elmore. Jeane received many awards and accolades as a teacher – yet she always recognized that her success would not have been possible without wonderful co-workers and family support. She retired from teaching in 1997.
Jeane continued her involvement at the Bethany E&R church and in the community. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and has been an active member of Hope Circle and WIC (Women In the Church) with new found sisters in Christ. She enjoyed her Modernette Club immensely, Delta Kappa Gamma, as well as various other clubs and organizations. KJLY was a passion for her and she appreciated the opportunity to share God’s love. Jeane loved entertaining and you could always count on a beautiful set table. Coffee (and wine) shared with her friends always brought a smile to her face.
Jeane’s special kind of love influenced those around her to freely share their love as well.
Jeane was blessed with a loving family: husband, Earl; daughter, Cyndi; grandsons: Tyler, Isaac, Noah; son, John, and daughter-in-law and friend, Sharon; granddaughter, Olivia; daughter, Crysti, and son-in-law, Paul; granddaughter, Taylor and grandsons: Travis, Trevor; son-in-law, Steve Wiese, and his wife Lee; grandson, Jeff Sutton and granddaughter, Molly Sutton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Cyndi.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family and will be divided between the Scholarship, India Health Foundation, the church, KJLY and United Hands Hospice.
