Albert Lea U-17 boys’ soccer team starts season 2-0

The Albert Lea U-17 boys’ soccer team won its first two games to start out the 2010 summer season.
In its first game Albert Lea defeated Waseca in Albert Lea 4-0. Scoring for Albert Lea was Tom Furland, Chad Maier, Jose Campos and Tyler Osmundson. Also putting on some offensive pressure was Carlton Stripe and Cesar Victorino.
Albert Lea’s defense was rock solid throughout the game, led by Anthony Tate, Logan Tufte, Jonathan Koenigs, Darien Weigel, Kyle Larsen and Spencer Overgaard.
Keeper Cameron Hove played a strong game recording the shut out for Albert Lea.
Albert Lea’s second game was played in driving wind and rain in Fairmont on May 10.
Playing against the wind in the first half, Albert Lea’s defense held true again with Furland taking his turn at the keeper position. Furland turned away all shots, including stopping two penalty shots.
After neither team scored in the first half, Albert Lea gained the wind advantage in the second half and turned up the pressure by scoring two goals to cement the victory. Cal Pirsig notched both goals for Albert Lea. Julio Ambriz, Steve Kreun, Brandon Ranum and Byron Mendez led strong midfield play.
The U-17 boys play May 26 when they travel to Waseca. The next home game for the boys is June 7 when they play Owatonna at Memorial field.
