Editorial: Vitality outfit needs a name

The local organization that is carrying the torch these days for the AARP/Blue Zones Vitality Project that took place in 2009 needs to decide on a name.

This spring, Tribune staff writers have seen its leaders call the organization by many names: National Vitality Center, Albert Lea Vitality Project, Vitality Project Center, the 2010 Vitality Project, among others.

It gets confusing for the public. People have been heard to just call it “that vitality thingy.”

Organizations need to have a clear name to raise awareness of their existence and mission. The organization carrying the principles of the Blue Zones in Albert Lea should select a name that sounds more permanent and less temporary.

“Project” seems temporary. And it seems “project” refers to last summer’s experiment. “Center” sounds as if the outfit is going to stick around for a while.

The organization’s website indeed is www.nationalvitalitycenter.com, and on there in big words it proclaims to be the National Vitality Center.

Perhaps that is the brand name it should rally itself around.
