Editorial: We apologize for Bookends

Print lends itself to a higher degree of responsibility than other forms of media.
Because of this, newspapers will make corrections. They will make clarifications. Even so, rarely do they offer apologies.
The Albert Lea Tribune hereby apologizes for the Bookends book-review column that appeared in print on Page 5 of the Tuesday, May 25, edition.
It contained mildly vulgar language that the Tribune does not approve of, and somehow it slipped past a proofreader Tuesday morning, largely because the column was placed on the page near the deadline for sending pages to the press.
Managing Editor Tim Engstrom has notified the authors of Bookends that their column has been terminated, and he has taken appropriate steps with news staff to ensure it does not happen again.
The Tribune a few months ago did have requests from a reader or two to write book reviews. If the people who called remain interested, they can contact Engstrom at 379-3433. We still would like to have a locally written book-review column.
