A woman from Hartland reported getting a call from a con artist on Wednesday.

Evelyn Haack, 82, said she received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson. He said he was in London and in trouble — giving a story about renting a boat, then getting arrested for a violation. He said he can’t leave the country without coming up with $2,500 and asked her for the money.

She asked questions, including who was taking care of his children if he was in London. He replied his wife.

Haack said she realized something was fishy, because his grandson has a girlfriend.

She called her daughter and asked about the grandson’s whereabouts. The daughter called her son. He said he was working in New Richland.

Haack reported the scam attempt to the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office. The toll-free number is (800) 657-3787.
