Hitting a high note

Harmony Junction Barbershop Chorus has hit a high note in its history.
The chorus placed first in Plateau A of the division contest at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Land O’Lakes District Spring Convention held May 1 in Nicollet and hosted by the Mankato Riverblenders. There were nine choruses in the division, said member Bill Buege. Divisions are determined by the size of the chorus.
With this placing, Harmony Junction qualified for the district contest in October.
Harmony Junction is directed by Ken Kiehne of Harmony. The chorus also had coaches come in for rehearsals to offer suggestions, Buege added.
In the contest, the chorus performed two numbers, “Who’s That Coming Down the Square?” and “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.”
Choruses were judged on music, presentation and sinaging.
The chorus meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday. In the summer it meets in the choir room at Albert Lea High School and during the school year it meets in the choir room at Southwest Middle School.
The chorus is always looking for new members. It’s open to any men who enjoy singing. Anyone interested in joining can call Tony Rogness at 373-2512. The chorus currently has 30 members.
In addition to preparing for the fall contest, Harmony Junction will be singing in churches in Albert Lea and the Harmony area this summer.
