Political party candidates across Iowa will face the first round of voters of the year on Tuesday during the state primary election.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. statewide.

During the primary, candidates from each party will run against the other candidates in the same party to win the party’s nomination and ultimately have their names placed on the general election ballot.

Candidates who do not have opponents must also be voted on during the election before having their names placed on the general election ballot.

In Iowa, candidates running for county, state or federal offices have a party affiliation.

Because Iowa’s primary election is a closed primary, voters must declare a party affiliation to participate, according to the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office. This means that only voters who are registered with a party or who declare themselves to be members of the party at the time of voting may actually vote on that party’s ballot.

Voters can only receive the ballot for one party.

Candidates on the ballots have filed with the Secretary of State for state and federal offices or with county auditors for county offices.

Here is a brief description of the candidates Winnebago and Worth County voters will see on the ballot:

Winnebago County

County supervisors

Running for county supervisor in District 1 are Gloria E. Johnson and Terry Durby as Republicans. There are no Democratic candidates.

Running for county supervisor in District 3 are Stacy Willert as a Republican and Warren Willie Wubben as a Democrat.

Wubben is the incumbent.

Other county positions

For auditor, Republican Karla Niederkofler is running to fill a vacancy after the previous auditor resigned. Niederkofler was appointed after the resignation but must now be officially elected to remain in the position.

For recorder, Republican Kristin Colby has re-filed for office.

Republican Julie A. Swenson has filed for re-election for treasurer.

There were no county attorney filings, so this position will be decided based on write-in votes at the general election.

Worth County

County supervisors

Running for county supervisor in District 1 are Dennis May as a Democrat and Dave Prestholt as a Republican. May is the incumbent.

Running for county supervisor in District 3 are Jeffrey L. Creger as a Democrat and Lois Colleen Lawler as a Republican. Creger is the incumbent.

Other county positions

For county treasurer, Republican Jake Hanson, the incumbent, has re-filed for office.

For recorder, Republican Liz Kenison has filed for re-election.

For attorney, Republican Jeffrey H. Greve is seeking re-election.

No Democrats have filed in these races, and each of these candidates will be unopposed.

State offices

Governor

On the Republican primary ballot will be Terry E. Branstad, Rod Roberts and Bob VanderPlaats.

Incumbent Gov. Chet Culver is running as a Democrat.

Attorney General

Running as a Republican Breanna Findley, while Tom Miller is running as a Democrat.

Secretary of Agriculture

Incumbent Bill Northey is seeking the Republican nomination, and Francis Thicke is seeking the Democratic nomination.

Treasurer of State

On the Republican ballot will be David D. Jamison and James A. Heavens. On the Democratic ballot will be Michael L. Fitzgerald.

Auditor of State

David A. Vaudt, a Republican, is running unopposed in this race.

Secretary of State

On the Republican ballot will be George Eichhorn, Chris Sanger and Matt Schultz. On the Democratic ballot will be Michael A. Mauro.

State Representative District 11

Running as Republicans are Henry Vincent Rayhons and Dennis M. Olson, while Ann Marie Fairchild is running as a Democrat.

Rayhons is the incumbent.

Federal offices

Running on the Republican ballot is Tom Latham, and running on the Democratic ballot is Bill Maske.
