50 years ago – 1960

The Albert Lea Junior Legion baseball team improved their Southern Minnesota Junior Legion League record to 3-0 with a 4-2 win over Rochester. Albert Lea scored (4) runs in the last inning with (2) outs. Dick Oliphant threw a (5) hitter for the win.

Ellendale defeated New Richland 11-1 in a Four County League amateur baseball game. Ellendale was led by Ray Bailey with (3) hits including (2) home runs and Ed Jensen with (3) hits and (1) home run.

The Minnesota Gopher baseball team defeated the University of Southern California 2-1 in (10) innings to win their second NCAA championship in (5) years.

25 years ago – 1985

In American Legion baseball Glenville defeated Grand Meadow 8-2. Neal Schilling had (2) hits and (4) RBI’s and Rick Broitzman pitched a complete game for Glenville. Alden won over Lyle 7-2. Winning pitcher Stefan Koziolek threw a (6) hitter and Pete Schuster had (2) hits for Alden.

Kirby Puckett hit a home run and (2) doubles to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 7-5 win over the Texas Rangers. Mike Smithson was the winning pitcher.

The following awards were presented at the annual ALHS Golf Banquet; All Big Nine – Shellie Rice; Tiffany Freeze – All Big Nine and Most Valuable Player; Joni Wright – Most Inspirational; Stephani Brand – Most Improved; Gayle Vangen – Most Valuable Player; Carrie Raiche – Best “B” Squad.

10 years ago – 2000

Results in Class A Minnesota Track and Field included John Jacobs of United South Central third in the 110 meter high hurdles and Eric Beck of Alden-Conger fourth in the 1600 meter run.

Awards presented to the ALHS boys golf team included the following: All Conference – Justin Bennett; All Conference Honorable Mention – Adam Boelter and Dan Breuer; Letter winners were Bennett, Boelter, Breuer, Ryan Thompson, Dustin Baldwin and Adam Elseth.

Todd Wayne of Albert Lea shot a hole – in – one at the Albert Lea Country Club on the par three , 100 yard no. 10 hole.
