Albert Lea boys’ 4×800 meter relay team, made up of Matt Tiegs, Jack Sturtz, Trevor Rasmussen and Sean Laurie, came up just short at the section meet finishing third overall but still impressed.

“They had an impressive season,” head coach Lisa Deyak said. “It was fun to see them have success this year.”

Relay member Matt Tiegs, ran in the 4×800 knowing it would make a trip to state in the 400 meter more difficult, a race he ended up finishing sixth in.

“When he saw he could help out the 4×800 team he did that,” Deyak said. “He made a personal sacrafice.”

Also performing well for the Tigers were Alik Smeed, Tommy Tiegs and Kyle Kriewall.

“Kyle is an amazing competitor,” Deyak said. “He competed incredibly well in the high jump and his best jump was his last.”

The 4×100 meter relay team, made up primarily by underclassman also impressed.

“They finished ninth overall, and we didn’t expect that,” Deyak said. “It was very cool.”
