The Albert Lea Tigers legion baseball team picked up two wins this week, beating Rochester Lourdes Thursday and Rochester Century Friday.
On Thursday the team won 18-3 in a five inning game. Backed by 15 hits, Jon Mittag gave up three earned runs while striking out eight and walking two. The Tigers scored six runs in the first inning, four off a Jordan Cooper grand slam.
Jordan Mondeel added more power, hitting two home runs while going 4-for-4 with six RBIs and two doubles.
“Everything we hit was hit hard,” head coach Jack Kortan said.
Aaron Klatt went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Cole Sorenson went 2-for-2, Colby Strilaeff went 2-for-3, Cooper went 1-for-3 and J.T. Bellrichard added 3 RBIs, going 1-for-2.
Mittag didn’t need to be perfect as the Tiger offense exploded, but pitched well.
“He looked good,” Kortan said. “Got into a little trouble in the third inning but ended with two strikeouts.”
On Friday, the Tigers didn’t hit well but won 2-1 over Rochester Century.
Starting pitcher Aaron Klatt pitched a complete game, giving up no earned runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.
“Aaron pitched a great game,” coach Jay Enderson said. “Even hobbling a bit on a bad ankle.”
While Klatt couldn’t run the bases, he did enough with his bat, getting a hit and watching his pinch-runner score in the second.
Carter Kortan added two hits, Strilaeff added one hit and Cole Sorenson and Mittag had RBIs.
The Tigers made two great defensive plays. In the third, Klatt dived forward catching a pop up and threw out the runner at first. In the fouth, Mittag dived to his right at first base to catch a liner that would have rolled to the fence, saving two runs.
The Tigers play again Sunday at 1 p.m. against North St. Paul at Hayek Field.
