Conservation cost-sharing announced

Through the Freeborn County Soil and Water Conservation District’s association with the Greater Blue Earth River Basin Alliance, landowners in that watershed area now have the opportunity to apply for 75 percent cost-sharing for conservation practice installations. In Freeborn County this area covers almost 100,000 acres in the northwest comer and along much of the western edge, from which water flows west or northwest into the Greater Blue Earth River System.

Funds are available in two different categories: one is for Ag Best Management Practices (BMPs) and the other for Urban BMPs. Examples of AgBMPs would include water and sediment control basins, grade stabilizing structures and grass waterways, to mention a few. Intent of the grant is to help stabilize eroding areas impacting riparian zones. Projects along or within a few hundred feet of open ditches, lakes, streams and wetlands are being sought.

Examples of urban projects would include rain gardens and storm water control projects. These funds can be used on private or publicly owned property.
