UP – To the Freeborn County Relay for Life.

The annual relay will be on Friday at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Survivors, caregivers and cancer-fighting advocates are invited to gather for the relay. The Relay for Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society and the money raised goes to cancer research, treatment and raising awareness for cancer prevention. The local Relay for Life chairwoman is Vicki Manges. Opening ceremonies start at 6 p.m. Friday with speeches from honored cancer survivors Peggy Brech and Joani Kuth. Greg Henderson, this year’s honored caregiver, will also speak. Luminaries will be lit at dusk, and we hope many people come out to support the cause!

UP – To smiles on children of all ages because of the Freeborn County Fair.

Though the fair still has a full day of activities, we’d like to give a thumbs up to all area residents who went and enjoyed the fair. The Freeborn County fair attracts a lot of people, which is a good thing.

DOWN – To Brett Favre.

We all expected that he would flip flop again, but we were hoping he’d just make a decision and stick with it. There will be no way of knowing what he will eventually decide, so we’re not going to believe anything he says until the first game of the season … or the second or third game.

UP – To all the concerned residents.

For how much debate there has been and for how many letters to the editor we have gotten about the Freeborn County Sheriff’s race, we know that the public cares about who’s running the sheriff’s office. It’s heartening to know that so many people are passionate about the leadership of the county’s public safety. We hope this passion translates into lots of voters on Aug. 10 for the primary election. This election is important as it determines who’s on the ballot in November.
