For the first time since it was organized three years ago, the varsity boys’ soccer team beat the alumni 3-0 in the annual scrimmage Saturday at Hammer Field.

The alums fielded a team of ex-Tiger soccer players whose playing days date back seven years.

Benton Frayne and Taylor Zimmerman, who were captains of the 2003 squad, played along with Lars Gjersvik, who was a 2009 captain and Big Nine all-conference.

The current varsity team scored all of their goals in the first half and earned the shutout in front of junior goalkeeper Tom Furland.

“(Furland) played fantastic,” Albert Lea head coach Elia Romano said. “He saw quite a bit of the ball, especially in the second half, and kept a few out that were surprising. He handled all the easy stuff as well.”

Callen Pirsig scored the varsity’s first goal on an unassisted play that was “manufactured out of nothing,” according to Romano.

Tyler Shaw scored the team’s second goal off a throw in by Alik Smed and the third goal as well on a pass from Pirsig.

“We scored three different types of goals,” Romano said. “It’s nice to see us generating offense from different ways.”

The Tigers will start their regular season Tuesday at Rochester Century. The home opener will be Tuesday, Sept. 7 when they host Winona at 7 p.m.
