Weekend is full of activities and fundraisers in the county

Weekend Planner

Many events are happening around the area this weekend. Continuing is the “Art in Fashion” show at the Albert Lea Art Center. Also playing is “A Little Night Music” at the Riverland Theatre. Again the Pelican Breeze II cruises Albert Lea Lake, but check the following schedule for reduced prices this weekend. “Up” will be the featured free movie at Edgewater Park on Friday evening. Fundraising events are scheduled for the weekend, including bake sales and a pork chop supper.

Emmons Borderfest is this weekend and more information can be found on Page 5. Kernel Days is this weekend in Wells, and events started on Wednesday. A schedule of events was printed in the Aug. 12 edition of the Albert Lea Tribune. Events run from 8 a.m. to around 11 p.m. on Saturday, with most events at Half Moon Park. There will be tournaments for bocce ball and cribbage, a firemen’s dance at the fire hall and an outdoor movie on Saturday night. Other activities all weekend include Lions Club bingo, volleyball and softball tournaments, food stands and other entertainment at the Bevcomm Stage.

Friday

  • A ribbon cutting will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Wells Depot to celebrate Kernel Days in Wells. The Riverblenders Quarter will perform.
  • The “Art in Fashion” shows at the Albert Lea Art Center will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shows feature the work of Stacia Lang and Julia Olson.
  • A Pelican Breeze II pizza cruise will go from 6 to 7:30 p.m., departing from the Pelican Breeze boat landing. Call 383-2630 by 4 p.m. Friday for reservations. Pizza cruises are $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 and younger.
  • Riverland Theatre presents “A Little Night Music.” The musical will play at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre at Riverland Community College in Austin. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling 507-433-0595. Box office hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before performances. All proceeds go to theater and music scholarships.
  • A free movie plays at Edgewater Park bandshell at 8:30 p.m. “Up” will be shown, and bench seating is available or bring a lawn chair and blankets.

Saturday

  • The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • A bake sale will be at Emmons Senior Center from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds go to improvements and programs at the Emmons Senior Center.
  • The “Art in Fashion” shows at the Albert Lea Art Center will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shows feature the work of Stacia Lang and Julia Olson.
  • A bake sale will be at Northbridge Mall in Albert Lea from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All money raised will go to the Freeborn County Humane Society.
  • The Freeborn County Historical Museum expansion will kickoff at the museum from noon until 3 p.m. There will be 15-minute PowerPoint presentations throughout the day, and there will be free admission to the museum.
  • Musician Sean Benz of Windom will perform with the DC Drifters from Austin at the Knights Lounge at the Knights Inn in Albert Lea. Shows are at 3 and 7 p.m. Single tickets are $10, tickets for a couple are $15. Benz has played shows across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota singing everything from Johnny Cash to Elvis, Hank Williams, Buddy Holly and Buck Owens for the past several years.
  • A Pelican Breeze II public cruise will begin at 4 p.m. at the Pelican Breeze boat landing. Call 383-2630 for more information. Cost is $5 per person, and $5 for ages 5 and under.
  • The seventh annual All Veterans-All Eras Picnic at Swensrud Park in Northwood, Iowa, will start at 1 p.m. Free burger, brat, maid-rites, sweet corn, lemonade and coffee. Bring salads, side dishes or desserts to share. There will be entertainment and door prizes. All veterans and their friends and families are invited to join. Contact Jerry Parmley at 641-293-5131.
  • A grilled pork chop supper will be at the Emmons American Legion from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $6 for children. Menu includes grilled pork chops, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, rolls, lemonade and coffee. Funds raised will go to Gateway Park improvement projects including new restrooms and playground equipment. The supper is sponsored by the Emmons Commercial Club, Emmons Area Development Group and Emmons Sons of the American Legion.

  • A Pelican Breeze II pirates and princess cruise will depart at 6 p.m. Dress up as a pirate or princess, and cruise includes pizza and pop. Cost is $12 for adults and $4 for children. Make reservations by calling 383-2630 by 5 p.m. Saturday.
