AUSTIN — Austin High School went into lockdown and was in a code red shortly before 1 p.m. after a student made a threatening comment in class. According to Superintendent David Krenz, school officials quickly determined there was no threat to students or staff. The code red, or emergency lockdown, was called off at around 1:45 p.m.

“We had the student that had made the statement in our custody,” Krenz said, further explaining that the student was brought to the office by their teacher shortly after the comment was made.

Once a lockdown is called, students are ushered into classrooms by their teachers, who then lock the classroom doors and shut off the lights.

Krenz did not reveal what exactly the student had said to cause the lockdown, citing school policy.

“Basically, we practice this several times a year, five times a year for sure,” Krenz said. “It’s good that we do that so everyone responds quickly and safely, so that no one is put into harm’s way.”

The most important thing, according to Krenz, is to determine how truthful threats made to the school are.

The student will face severe consequences for his actions. According to Krenz, the student could face either an out-of-school suspension or an expulsion from the district. The school board would have to decide on an expulsion, however.
