Ryan “Pie” Truesdell Memorial has many weekend activities

There will be many events for the family this weekend, including two small-town festivals, the Ryan “Pie” Truesdell Memorial Sports Weekend and a community pilates event, among others.

The fourth-annual Ryan “Pie” Truesdell Memorial Sports Weekend is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday and will include golf, softball, volleyball and fishing tournaments.

The golf tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Green Lea Golf Course. The entry fee is $50. Cost includes 18 holes of golf and a cart. Prizes are available, and dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

The softball tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at Snyder Field. The tournament is certified by the Amateur Softball Association.

The first-place team will be awarded $300 and a traveling trophy, and second place will win $200. First-, second- and third-place teams will also win free entry to next year’s tournament.

The volleyball tournament also will be held at the sand volleyball courts at Snyder Field. Entry fee is $15.

Events continue Sunday with a fishing tournament at Katherine Island on Fountain Lake from noon to 3 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. Bait will be furnished, and people can register at Katherine Island the day of the tournament.

A prize of $75 will be awarded for the heaviest game fish, not including carp.

All proceeds raised go to support local youth through scholarships.

All checks can be made payable to the Ryan Truesdell Memorial Fund at American Bank, 217 S. Newton Ave., Albert Lea.

Truesdell, 20, died tragically Aug. 14, 2007, in a farming accident.

Friday

  • Artwork by Gilbert Johnson Jr. will be on display in the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The show goes through Sept. 25.
  • The Southern Minnesota Old Car Co. will have its final “Cruisin’ Broadway” car cruise of the summer from 6 to 8 p.m. starting from the parking lot of the former Red Owl Building. Afterward, participants are invited to go to the Green Mill Restaurant.
  • A pizza cruise on the Pelican Breeze II begins at 6 p.m. from the Pelican Breeze boat landing. Cost is $20 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 and under. Call 507-383-2630 by 4 p.m. Friday for reservations.

Saturday

  • The Hollandale Harvest Festival kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Hollandale Fire Hall. Events go throughout the day and are for all ages (see insert). Some of the events scheduled include car football, horse and wagon rides, a mudbog, parades, along with several others.
  • The 27th annual Threshing Festival starts in Kiester. Events this day include a horse pull, parade and a soup supper, among others. Admission is $6 for adults; children 12 and under are free. A keepsake button comes with each paid admission. Charge is $10 per night for camping inside the electric hook-up area and no charge for camping outside the electric hook-up area. See Page 5 for the more information about the festival.
  • The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.

  • Pilates instructor Ginny Massie will teach Pilates in the Park at 10 a.m. at the Edgewater Park Bandshell. Pilates in the Park is hosted by the National Vitality Center’s faith initiative.   • The Freeborn County Humane Society and Maurices in the Northbridge Mall will present a Rescues & Runways Fashion Show at the mall. Adoptions and silent auction will go from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The fashion show will begin at 1 p.m. At the event, “Ava Finds a Home” author Patty Stanley and Ava the dog will be in attendance for a book signing. “Ava Finds a Home” was originally written as the 2010 United Way of Freeborn County book.
  • A public cruise on the Pelican Breeze II begins at 4 p.m. at the Pelican Breeze boat landing. Cost is $15 per person or $5 for children ages 5 and under.
  • Albert Lea Moose Lodge 1703 will have a tribute to 9/11. There will be games throughout the day, and then at 5:30 p.m. there will be a special ceremony by the Legion Color Guard. Afterward will be a hog roast, followed by music by Flashback during a street dance. At 9:11 p.m., the tribute will be held, which will include several fire departments.

Sunday

  • The 27th annual Threshing Festival continues in Kiester. Events this day include a church service, breakfast, horse pull demo, parade and cribbage tournament, among others. Admission is $6 for adults; children 12 and under are free. A keepsake button comes with each paid admission.
  • Wedgewood Cove Golf Club will host a three-person best-shot tournament at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. Flights will be determined after play. Cost is $25 per player for people with a season pass or $50 for nonseason pass holders. Entries must be in by Friday. Cost includes cart and range balls.
  • A public cruise on the Pelican Breeze II begins at 1:30 p.m. from the Pelican Breeze boat landing. Cost is $15 per person or $5 for children ages 5 and under.
  • A couples golf tournament is being held at Green Lea Golf Course. Call the business at 373-1061 for more information.

Hollandale Harvest Festival Saturday schedule:

  • Pancake breakfast, 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the fire hall. Donations are accepted to benefit the First Responders at donation boxes during all events.
  • City-wide rummage sale, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Car football at Mr. Machinery, 9 a.m. registration, 11 a.m. start time. Call 507-383-5743 for entry information.
  • Antique tractor and equipment display, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mr. Machinery. Contact 507-889-3309 for more information.
  • Farmers market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the frontage road by the fire hall.
