Step back in time at Autumn in the Village this weekend

Take a step back in time with food and entertainment of yesteryear at Autumn in the Village this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Historical Museum, Library & Village.

Locals and visitors of all ages are invited to activities in the country school and village. Old fashioned candy will be a children’s favorite, on sale at the general store.

Old-time photos offer a snapshot of days gone by. Dress up in hats, blouses, shawls, shirts and jewelry of years past at the photography shop. These 4-by-6-inch snapshots will be available for just $3 per photo.

Boys and men alike can enjoy a stop in the barbershop and visiting the woodworking shop to see foot-powered saws, busy at work. Other activities will include an archeological dig, stick weaving and rope making, along with corn shelling and grinding. Demonstrations by the Twilight Treadlers and Simply Sisters, wagon rides, music and a variety of additional displays will showcase Minnesotan life in historical times.

The menu for the day includes crumble burgers, hot dogs, chips, apple pie and ice cream, sarsaparilla, water, coffee, pop and kettle corn.

Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for students ages 12 to 18, and free for Freeborn County Historical Museum members and children under age 11. Proceeds will benefit the museum.

The Historical Museum, Library and Village is located at 1031 Bridge Ave. in Albert Lea.

Friday

  • Our Savior’s Lutheran Church located at 320 W. College St. in Albert Lea will host a bazaar and bake sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch is $6 and includes vegetable beef soup, sloppy joes, pie and coffee. Full-size and baby quilts will be available for purchase. Tickets will be sold for a raffle drawing for a Diamonds & Nosegays Quilt, queen size (90 by 90 inches). Cost is one ticket for $5 or three for $10.
  • The Harvest Craft Sale will be at Northbridge Mall from 10 am. to 9 p.m. Shop a variety of handmade crafts. Northbridge Mall is located at I-90 and Bridge Ave., Albert Lea.
  • The Pelican Breeze II Pizza Cruise will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pelican Breeze Boat Landing. Call 507-383-2630, by 4 p.m. Friday for reservations. Pizza cruises are $20/adult, $5 ages 5 and under.
  • Artwork by Gilbert Johnson Jr. will be on display in the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The show goes through Sept. 25.
  • The fall festival at the Lisa Olson farm in rural Northwood, Iowa, which goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. offers handmade crafts, primitive antiques, corn shocks, baked goods, pumpkins and gourds, free food sampling and more. The Olson family farm is located seven miles east of Northwood, take Highway 105 to Vine and drive a half mile north.

Saturday

  • The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • All are invited to a salad luncheon at Bear Lake Concordia Lutheran Church, 15554 690th Ave., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Delicious salads, hot shredded pork sandwiches and bars will be served. Also available will be a bake sale, garden produce, three gift baskets, a raffle and crafts. Admission is $6 for adults, $2 for children ages 5 to 10, and free for preschool age children and under. Funds will go toward a new handicap lift.
  • Wedgewood Cove Golf Club on Saturday will host a club championship (no time provided). The format is 18 holes of stroke play with low net and low gross winners. Any season pass holder, punch card holder, league player or anyone with an established handicap at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club are eligible to play. The entry fee for season pass holders is $25 per player and non season pass holder is $50 per player. Entry fee includes cart and range balls. Participants are invited to the Cove Bar following the round of play for prizes, food and drinks.
  • The Albert Lea Knights of Columbus is hosting a four-person best-shot fundraiser at Clarks Grove Golf Course. Start time is 10 a.m.

Wine tasting for adults. The Olson family farm is located seven miles east of Northwood, take Highway 105 to Vine and drive one-half mile north.

  • The Freeborn County Pheasant and Habitat Banquet starts with a 5:30 p.m. social hour and 6:30 p.m. dinner at the 4-H Building on the Freeborn County Fairgrounds in Albert Lea. A $20 ticket includes the meal and a chance at one of the 10 grand prizes, including a generator, Hasqvarna chainsaw, guns, ice auger, Jim Hansel prints, 2010 Polaris four-wheeler and Piggy Blues meal. A 50-cent raffle includes 250 prizes.

Sunday

  • The Albert Lea Alano Society will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. until noon at 1005 N. Ulstad Ave. in Albert Lea. The breakfast includes pancakes, French toast, hashbrown potatoes, eggs, patty sausage, coffee and juice. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children 10 and under. The public is welcome to attend this breakfast.
