Lies run rampant in this election

Apparently some citizens are experiencing memory loss, total disregard of history or attempting to rewrite history in trying to blame our country’s economic situation on our current national administration.

David Larson’s column in the Sunday Tribune (last week) was an excellent factual recount of how the past produced the serious financial condition this country is facing. I believe anyone planning to vote should read and re-read this column and think about it.

The past four Democratic presidents brought the deficit down. Clinton managed in spite of Congress to turn the largest national deficit ever into a surplus. George W. Bush was even better than his dad in deficit spending. He depleted the surplus and in no time turned this country backward. The lies used to propel the attack on Iraq should never have happened. That is not how our government was set up to work. The cost of that war has not been calculated.

Reagan’s regime started the downward spiral of this country’s problems and rolled right along with deficit spending.

For our current President Obama coming into the situation of problems created by past Republican presidents to accomplish all he has done so far is remarkable.

Outrageous lies seem to run rampant in this campaign. It is sad as well as repulsive and is a reflection of how low a society can become. This also applies to those who support these lies. The saying “money corrupts” seems to apply to the mailings we have received degrading Robin Brown and Tim Walz. It costs thousands of dollars to send these out. We do not watch television — we prefer reading at our house so have not seen the despicable ads I am told about. I get upset when people say all politics or politicians are crooked or corrupt.

There are politicians as well as corrupt in this world. We need to support the people who represent the citizens instead of special interest.
