Alik Smed had an assist and a goal, and the Albert Lea Tigers beat the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs 3-1 Monday, extending their winning streak to four games.
The Tigers (6-6-1, 2-5-1 Big Nine) came out the gates strong, and scored in the match’s opening three minutes on a Smed goal, assisted by Cal Pirsig.
“It looked like we were going to open it up,” Albert Lea head coach Elia Romano said of the opening minutes. “We had a lot of pressure on them.”
But at the 15-minute mark, the Bulldogs (6-3-2) responded and tied the game on a free kick.
“Defensively, we were stretched for pace,” Romano said. “(P-E-M) played with a lot of intensity.”
The Tigers opened the match up in the second half, though, and scored on two Smed throw-ins.
Smed assisted Tyler Shaw’s goal 13 minutes into the second half to put the Tigers up 2-1. Shaw scored at the far post on a full swinging volley from four yards out.
Darik Weigel scored the Tigers’ third goal, on a Shaw assist.
The Tigers have lost only once in their past seven matches, dating back to Sept. 16 at Austin.
“We’ve got a nice little streak going,” Romano said. “Hopefully the boys aren’t satisfied and we can continue to win soccer games and get better.”
The Tigers will have their second shot at Austin (6-4-2, 3-2-2 Big Nine) Thursday.
