The United South Central Rebels girls’ tennis team won the Gopher Valley Conference championship Saturday, with seven players earning all-conference honors.
“The girls were so excited and I was proud of them,” USC head coach Kim Stervermer said. “They all hit well and moved their feet. This was my first conference title as a head coach, and I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better.”
The Rebels dominated the conference meet, with every player on the team winning first place — from No. 1 singles to No. 3 doubles.
“I don’t know if that has ever happened before,” Stervermer said. “The conference title was one of the goals we set at the beginning of the year, and we have worked hard all season to accomplish that goal.”
Stervermer said she was most proud of the No. 2 doubles team of Megan Chicos and Dani Roberts, and No. 4 singles Claire Christian. In both matches, the Rebels players were down in the second set, but rallied to win.
“The determination of these girls was unbelievable,” Stervermer said. “They weren’t going to give up, they wanted the championship.”
