HOLLANDALE — Everyone in this small community is rolling up their sleeves and pitching in to help with the annual fall supper at Hollandale Christian School.

This year’s supper will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the school. For a donation, people will be served turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, beans, cranberry sauce, buns and can choose from 1,000 pieces of dessert.

Last year less people than expected came to the fall supper because many people weren’t done harvesting. This year organizers, Karen Posthumus, Tina Feuerhak and Amy Munger expect about 1,000 people.

“The money rasied goes to providing students with materials and activities to enhance their learning,” Posthumus said.

Over the years the fall supper has raised funds for new library books, desks, chairs, music supplies, updated curriculum and computer supplies. She said the event is staffed completely by parents and students. People come from all over the county for the supper, which has been benefitting the students since it began in 1982.

“Every single family in the school participates,” Posthumus said.

She said students get excited to help, and generally fifth- through eighth-graders have roles in cleanup and odd jobs during the supper.

“It helps kids have a better sense of community,” Posthumus said.

It takes a lot of work, too — volunteers prepare all the food at the school in the days before the supper. There are more than 400 pounds of turkey, 120 pounds of ham, 400 pounds of potatoes, 13 gallons of beans, 7 bushels of apples, 10 gallons of cranberries, 90 dozen buns and 1,000 pieces of dessert.

“It’s a time of fellowship for the community and parents,” Posthumus said.

Donations were provided by Piggy Blues BBQ, Mrs. Gerry’s Kitchen, Sampson Dairy, The Savory Skillet, Superfresh Produce and Bakery, Arrow Printing, Ventura Foods and more. Posthumus said the fall supper is truly a community event.
