Funeral services for Marcella Augusta Holmen, 89, of rural Glenville will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. The Rev. Wayne Halvorson and Vicar James Kassera will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. To sign the guest book, go to www.bayviewfuneral.com.

Marcella Holmen

Marcella died on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at her home.

Marcella Augusta Holmen was born on June 18, 1921, in Elysian Township, the daughter of Emil P. and Emma A.(Roemhildt) Quiram. She grew up in Elysian Township and went to Parochial School at Bell Church (St. Peter’s Lutheran Church). On Nov. 28, 1948, Marcella was united in marriage to Leo E. Holmen at Courtland. The couple farmed together for many years. Marcella was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, holding various offices in the Ladies Aid, taught Sunday school, and served as a choir member and church organist. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting and bird watching. Other favorite pastimes included watching the Food Channel, reading, working crossword puzzles and most of all, spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children Gary (Judy) Holmen, Christine (Mike) Hein, Kathleen (Martin) Huber, Richard Holmen and Leone (Donald) Vanderploeg; grandchildren: Jeremy (Heather) Holmen, Jonathan (Karen) Holmen, Jennifer (Bradley) Storm, the Rev. Mike (Jana) Holmen, Melissa (Brian) Lund, Katherine (Jeffery) Jacobsen, Angela (Jason) Neumann, Mark Huber, Jessica (David) Buchs, Jeffery (Alison) Huber, Emily (Justin) Oman, Ellie (Alex McGuinnis) Holmen, Peter (Becca) Vanderploeg and Sarah Vanderploeg; great-grandchildren: Zane and Jill Holmen, Bryn, Olivia and Kate Holmen, Anna and Madelyn Lund, Bode and Callen Jacobsen, Aaron and Emily Neumann, Nathaniel Buchs and Baby Storm; sister, Clarsie Gloff; sisters-in-law: Edith Hanke, June Holmen and Sylvia Holmen; brother-in-law, Donald Dencker; aunts: Mable Fahning and Elsie Roemhildt; and many nieces and nephews.

Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Ernest Holmen, in 2001; a daughter in infancy; her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Pastor David Steuernagel; and her brother-in-law, Don Gloff.
