Funding available for conservation from USDA

Interested agricultural and forestry producers are invited to apply for the new USDA program called Conservation Stewardship Program. Applications are being accepted through Jan. 7, 2011, for the first funding and ranking cycle.

The Conservation Stewardship Program was authorized through enactment of the 2008 Farm Bill. Congress renamed and revamped the former Conservation Security Program completely to improve its availability and appeal to agricultural and forestry producers. USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) administers the program. Eligible lands include cropland, grassland, prairie, improved pastureland, and non-industrial private forestland.

To apply for the program, potential participants will be encouraged to use a self-screening checklist first to determine whether the new program is suitable for them or their operation. The self screening tool and other program information, including eligibility requirements can be viewed by visiting www.nrcs.usda.gov/new_csp or visit their local NRCS field office. Freeborn County participants should visit the Ag Service Center located at 1400 W. Main St., Albert Lea, or call (507) 373-5607 extension 3.
