Sibley students present play

Sibley Elementary School students in third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade will be auditioning, practicing and performing “The Wizard of Oz” with the help of Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre, a professional touring theater company. Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the theater in Southwest Middle School.

Chamber to host candidates forum

The Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee will host a public forum for the candidates running for the Freeborn County 5th District commissioner seat at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Lecture Hall at Riverland Community College’s Albert Lea campus. Candidates include Chad T. Hayson, Marilyn A. Roche, Hugh O’Byrne, Tony Pestorious, Curtis Smith, Mike Lee and Doug Conn.

Former speaker coming to speak

Former Minnesota Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher will be the guest speaker during the Greater Jobs annual meeting in Albert Lea Wednesday at Wedgewood Cove.

Kelliher, who served four years as Speaker of the House, is now the president of the Minnesota High Tech Association.

In addition to Kelliher’s speech, an annual report of the organization will be given and all of the board’s decisions from the past year will be ratified during the luncheon.

The meeting is free to Greater Jobs members.

Wrestling rivalry is back

The Albert Lea wrestling team hosts rival Owatonna at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, hoping to avenge last season’s 36-16 loss to the Huskies. Both teams are coming off impressive showings at the Clash in Rochester and the Huskies and Tigers are ranked No. 3 and 6, respectively in the state. Look for a great match at 160 pounds when the Tigers’ No. 3-ranked Cory Hansen takes on the No. 5-ranked Jordan Zeman. Fans will see exciting matches at 189 pounds and 215 pounds, too.

Bells to sound across country

A massive earthquake devastated the country of Haiti one year ago this coming Wednesday. Honoring Haiti, bells are to sound across Minnesota and the country at 3:53 p.m. for 35 seconds, the duration of the Haiti earthquake.
