Van Ryswyk lifts Wolverines 46-45

GLENVILLE — Kalli Van Ryswyk scored the go-ahead basket with six seconds left in the game Friday as the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines girls’ basketball team held off the Lanesboro Burros 46-45 in Glenville.
Van Ryswyk rebounded a missed free throw attempt and went up strong to get the layup and put the Wolverines (8-3, 7-3 Southeast) ahead with six seconds left. The Burros (3-10, 3-3) had a chance to tie but turned the ball over to end the game.
“They made a good push and I thought my kids responded well,” Wolverines head coach Lisa Ziebell said. “We weathered the storm with that push at the end.”
In the first half, with the game tied at 4-4, the Wolverines used a 13-3 run to jump out to an early 17-7 lead.
From that point on, the Wolverines outscored the Burros 11-6 to go into halftime with a commanding 28-13 lead.
Aggressive defensive allowed the Wolverines to jump out to an early 15-point lead.
“I told them this is the way we were going to win this game,” Ziebell said. “We get out there right away and get on them defensively, get some quick steals and get into their head.”
In the second half, the Burros fought back as Lanesboro chipped away at the lead with a 23-11 run to cut what was a 15 point deficit all the way down to three points as the Wolverines held a 39-36 lead with 5:01 remaining in the game.
With 1:43 left, Alisa Warnes sank two free throws to tie the game at 43 a piece.
The Burros then took the lead with 44 seconds left as Warnes sank a two point lay-up to give Lanesboro a 45-43 lead.
The Wolverines cut the lead to one when Emily Belshan sank the front end of a 1-and-1 to make the score 45-44.
With 8.7 second left, Belshan missed the second of two free throws, the Van Ryswyk went up got the ball and scored on a put back to give the Wolverines a 46-45 lead with six seconds left in the game.
After a timeout, the Burros tried to get the ball to half court, but the Wolverines knocked the ball away to secure a wild 46-45 victory.
“I told her in the huddle ‘we need you and we need you big’ and she did,” Ziebell said of Van Ryswyk’s lay-up.
Van Ryswyk led the Wolverines with 13 points and six rebounds.
Kailey Davis recorded 12 points, while Emily Belshan chipped in 11 points.
Glenville-Emmons is back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Schaeffer Academy.
