Bulldogs edge Wolverines 67-64

LAKE MILLS, Iowa — Lake Mills’ Alex Grunhovd dished out a school-record 18 assists and scored 12 points Tuesday as the Lake Mills Bulldogs boys’ basketball team defeated the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines 67-64 in Lake Mills.
The Bulldogs (15-4, 9-4 North Iowa) held a 60-53 lead with 51.7 second to go in the fourth quarter until an Andrew Lau 3-pointer cut the Lake Mills lead to 60-56 with 40.9 seconds to go.
After two made free throws by the Bulldogs, Lau again hit another 3-pointer to cut the Lake Mills lead to three at 62-59.
The Bulldogs made their free throws down the stretch, making 5-of-6 to secure the victory.
In the first two quarters, the Bulldogs dialed up six 3-pointers to help take a 45-38 lead into halftime.
Tyler Rice converted on four 3-pointers in the first half, while Tim Brandt made two.
“I felt we let the game slip away by letting them make six 3-pointers in the first half,” Wolverines head coach Dan Fredrickson said. “I thought that was the difference by letting them step into those six 3-pointers.”
Glenville-Emmons also had a tough time controlling the ball early as the Wolverines committed 11 turnovers in the first half. Glenville-Emmons committed 18 total turnovers in the game.
Also making it tough on the Wolverines was Lake Mills point guard Alex Grunhovd.
Grunhovd constantly attacked the Wolverines defense en route to his school-record 18 assists.
“Grunhovd played an outstanding game,” Bulldogs head coach Kyle Menke said.
While Grunhovd attacked the Wolverine’s defense, the Bulldogs played more aggressively which resulted in free throws. The Bulldogs made 14-of-21 from the free throw line, while Glenville-Emmons shot only 3-of-8.
Tyler Rice led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Marcus Gaskill and Grunhovd added 12 points apiece.
Tim Brandt and Dylan Davis also recorded 10 points a piece for Lake Mills.
Andrew Lau led the Wolverines with 24 points and Ryan Dempewolf had 14 points.
Landon Hall and Tyler Woodside both added 12 points for Glenville-Emmons.
Lake Mills is back in action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Forest City in Lake Mills.
Glenville-Emmons hits the court again at 7:15 p.m. Friday against Lanesboro in Glenville.
